Over-the-counter medications are available for treatment of cough that happened due to the reason of cold, allergy, and sinus infections. Antibiotics are useful in the case of bacterial infections. However, there are a lot of people who prefer to avoid synthetic medicines, and love to go for natural or home remedies to treat cough. As mentioned below, listed are a few home remedies for cough.


1. Honey


Honey has been a cough remedy for ages. It heals sore throat naturally. According to many studies, honey relieves cough far effectively than synthetic medicines, as it contains dextromethorphan (DM), a cough suppressant.


You can prepare a drink by mixing 1 teaspoon of honey with green tea or warm lemon water. The honey helps in soothing the throat, while the lime juice will help with congestion.

You can also use honey with ginger to heal coughing. Grate ginger and squeeze the grated ginger to extract its juice, add half teaspoon of ginger juice with 1teaspoon of honey and swallow it. Honey gives soothing and ginger is a natural antibiotic and anti-inflammatory.


2. Probiotics


Probiotics are live bacteria that are good for your digestive system. While probiotics do not relieve cough directly, but they do help improve your gut flora. Gut flora are the bacteria that reside in your intestines. The balance of gut flora will support the immune system function in the body. According to a study Lactobacillus, microorganisms in dairy might reduce the probability of a cold and sensitivity to certain antigens, such as pollen.

Fermented foods carrying lactobacilli comprise many ancient staples that include yogurt, some form of cheese, pickles, fermented sausages, fermented milk, and probiotic dairy products. You can use probiotic supplements as well, you will find good probiotic supplements from online stores.


3. Bromelain


You all will be surprised as you have never heard pineapple as a cough remedy, and that is certainly because you have never heard of bromelain. There is a shred of evidence to suggest that bromelain, an enzyme found only in the stem and fruit of pineapple. It might help conquer cough and loosen the mucus in your throat. It is better to eat a slice of pineapple or drink half a glass of fresh juice twice a day to enjoy the benefits of bromelain.

Bromelain also helps in relieving sinusitis and allergy-based sinus issue, due to which, it can help relieve coughs and mucus.


Before taking a bromelain supplement, one should take advice from a doctor as it should not be taken by people who take blood thinners. People, who are on antibiotics such as amoxicillin should also avoid taking bromelain supplements.


4. Peppermint


Most of the people are well aware of the healing properties of the peppermint leaves. Menthol, present in peppermint helps in decongesting the throat and helps in breaking mucus. Drinking peppermint tea can help soothe throat and decongest mucus. On the other hand, you can inhale peppermint vapors from a steam bath. A steam bath can be made by, adding 3 or 4 drops of peppermint oil in 1.5 liters of hot water. Cover your head with a towel, and inhale the steam by taking deep breaths directly above the water. Make sure to keep your head at a sufficient distance just to make sure that your skin doesn’t burn.


5. Milk and turmeric


Turmeric is a natural antioxidant, immune support, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral. It is found in almost all of the kitchens in India. Turmeric will help treat cold and cough if consumed by mixing it in warm milk. Drinking a glass of warm milk with turmeric before bed will help in recovering fast from cold and cough.


6. Spiced tea


Prepare a tea mixing Basil (tulsi) leaves, ginger, and black pepper. This tea will help improve your cough very fast. You can add honey and lemon to this tea to make them taste better and they add their healing benefits as well. All the above ingredients have natural properties fighting a common cold and cough.


7. Indian Gooseberry (Amla)


Indian Gooseberry is a rich source of Vitamin C, it helps enhance your immunity, metabolism and restricts viral and bacterial infections, including cough and cold.


8. Carrot juice


Carrot juice is a very uncommon home remedy to fight common cold and cough, but it is most effective. You might find it strange but carrot drink helps in relieving common cold and cough.


9. Saltwater gargle


This home remedy has been used for ages and many of you might have tried it at home sometime. This is a simple remedy and it helps a lot in relieving throat irritation. Just add a quarter to half a teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water and gargle it twice a day.

Note, children below the age of 6 years are not good at gargling. So it is best to try other home remedies for them.


How to prevent coughing?


Now you know how to treat cough naturally, but you should learn how to prevent it in the first place. To protect against cough and cold, you should get your annual flu shot, generally, it starts in October. Few more steps you can consider:


  • it is better to stay at home if you are sick. This way you will not infect others

  • cover your face with handkerchief or tissue while you cough or sneeze

  • to keep yourself hydrated, you should drink a lot of fluids

  • always keep your surroundings clean. It will help you live in a dust-free environment

  • always wash your hands, after eating, going to the bathroom, taking care of sick, and sneezing


When to call a doctor?


It is better to seek advice from a doctor, if you find it hard to breathe due to cough, or if you are coughing up blood. Respiratory tract infections (RTI) involve body pain and fever, whereas allergies don’t.


Immediately seek an appointment with a physician if you experience any of the symptoms in addition to your cough:


  • cold

  • dehydration

  • high fever

  • feeling restless or fatigue

  • thick or foul-smelling cough, green or yellow phlegm

  • weakness
