Acidity happens due to surplus secretion of acids in the gastric glands of the stomach, producing intestinal gas, foul breath, stomach pain, and additional symptoms. Many reasons can cause acidity, which includes the empty stomach, excessive intake of tea, coffee, smoking or alcohol. When the secretion of acid occurs often, you may experience acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This generally happens when you consume a heavy meal or spicy foods. Most of the people might have faced a problem of heartburn once or multiple times in their lifetime.
Doctors generally prescribe medications like Pantoprazole or Omeprazole. However, lifestyle changes can be productive as well.
The following are the ways to lower your heartburn or acid reflux problem.
1. Avoid Overeating
When you eat too much, it might trigger heartburn. This is because the stomach continues to remain distended when your stomach is filled with food. The human body has a muscle situated between the esophagus and stomach. Esophagus is a tube that lets food travel from mouth to stomach, and the muscle between the esophagus and stomach is called the LES (lower esophageal sphincter). Longer the stomach stays distended, the more likely the LES will not close appropriately. When LES does not close, it cannot stop food and stomach juices from rising back up into the esophagus.
Commonly, almost all reflux symptoms happens after a meal. It also seems that substantial meals might worsen acid reflux symptoms. One way of minimizing acid reflux is to avoid overeating.
2. Avoid or limit the intake of alcohol
Excessive intake of alcohol can enhance the severity of acid reflux and heartburn.
Alcohol has been a major contributing factor to acid reflux, its effect is different on different people. Some people might enjoy alcohol consumption in moderation with GERD. While other with GERD might experience worsening symptoms of heartburn after consuming less quantity of alcohol.
Always keep these tips in mind to lower the chances of alcohol-related reflux symptoms, especially people with GERD. The list is as follows:
Don’t take more than 1 drink.
Keep yourself away from drinking alcohol 2-3 hours before going to bed.
Keep track of diet and drinks that you consume, observing when you feel more severe GERD symptoms. If you find that a particular beverage or diet during alcohol consumption enhances the reflux problem, you might be able to stop on that beverage or diet to minimize your GERD symptoms.
3. Limit drinking tea or coffee
Caffeine is a prime component of both coffee and tea. It has been identified as a possible culprit for acid reflux in some cases. Caffeine can trigger acid reflux symptoms because it might relax the lower esophageal sphincter.
But, the evidence is not so clear and conflicting and the findings show differences within both types of beverages.
1. Basil Leaves (Tulsi)
Basil leaves (Tulsi), help stimulate our gut to produce increased mucus which in turn helps in relieving heartburn that often occurs with acidity. Chew 3-4 basil leaves at the first sign of acidity. You can prepare a drink by boiling a cup of water with 3-4 basil leaves in a pan. Leave it for some time and drink it when it is warm. This home remedy is the best for acidity.
2. Fennel seeds (Saunf)
Fennel seeds can help relieve acid reflux. Always chew Fennel seeds after meals to prevent stomach acidity. Due to the multiple gastrointestinal benefits, fennel tea will surely help your digestive tract to be healthy. Its tea is considered to be very helpful in treating indigestion and bloating due to the presence of healthy oils in these seeds.
3. Cinnamon (Dalchini)
Cinnamon is a natural antacid and can heal your gut, by improving digestion and absorption. Drink cinnamon tea to cure infections in the stomach. It is loaded with nutrients that have many health beneficial properties.
4. Carom seeds (Ajwain)
Carrom seeds have rich antacid properties, it helps you treat acid reflux naturally. By chewing, carom seeds mixed with black salt, and drinking warm water thereafter will heal your acidity in just a few days. Another way to consume it is by drinking mixture after boiling carom seeds in water and straining it.
Banana is alkaline. It carries huge importance when it comes to gut-related problems. It lowers the impact of acids on your stomach. Consuming banana a day, helps you heal your gut problem if suffering from acidity.
6. Lemon water
Lemon water helps in digestion, this property of lemon water makes it one of the best home remedy to treat acidity. It neutralizes the impact of acids present in your stomach. Drinking lemon water empty stomach promotes proper digestion. Adding black salt and cumin powder to this drink will give you much better results.
7. Buttermilk (Chhaachh)
Buttermilk is another useful ingredient to heal acidity. Drink a glass of buttermilk to get relief from acidity. It contains lactic acid that neutralizes the reflux in the gut. Buttermilk is the best source of probiotic and it is recommended for good digestion. Doctors endorse probiotic supplements for proper digestion. So, from now onwards, if you get acidity, avoid the antacid and drink a glass of buttermilk instead. You can add a pinch of black pepper, coriander leaves, and black salt for better results.
8. Cumin Seeds (Zeera)

Drinking cold milk can help neutralize acidity, but for people who are lactose tolerant. It is loaded with calcium, which stops the formation of acid. It is advised that you should consume a glass of milk the next time you suffer from acid reflux.
11. Coconut Water
Coconut water can also be a great alternative for people suffering from acidity. It is loaded with electrolytes such as potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. These electrolytes help pH balance in your body, which is important for controlling acidity. As coconut water is rich in fibre, it helps in digestion and prevents acidity.
12. Jaggery (Gur)
You must have noticed that our elders have a habit of eating jaggery after every meal. That’s because it promotes digestion. It lowers acid reflux in the gut, making it more alkaline. Eating jaggery after every meal will help you neutralize acidity.
